Full fibre broadband FAQ's

• What is Full Fibre or Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)?

  Full fibre or fibre to the premises (FTTP) is a broadband service that offers faster internet speeds via fibre cables all the way to customers’ homes in comparison to ‘regular’ fibre broadband in which copper cables supply the connection from the cabinet to the homes.

• What is the difference between greenfield and brownfield?

  Greenfield properties are generally newbuilds where only fibre (FTTP) has been deployed therefore there is no legacy copper network. Brownfield are generally older properties that are connected to the legacy copper network but also have access to the fibre (FTTP) network.

• How is Full Fibre broadband different from ‘regular’ fibre broadband?

  Fibre broadband is provided via fibre cables from the provider to BT Openreach cabinets. From these cabinets, ‘regular’ fibre broadband is then supplied to households through copper cables. This slows down the connection speed a little along the way.

  But with UW fibre to the premises (FTTP) or ‘fibre to the home’ (FTTH), the cables that supply the connection to households are also fibre. This makes it much faster than regular fibre broadband.

• Is there a contract or can customers cancel at any time?

  There is an 18 month contract for either of the UW FTTP tariffs. If the service is cancelled within the contract period then an Early Termination Fee (ETF) is payable equal to the remaining months, less a 20% discount, plus the £10 broadband disconnection fee.

• Does an engineer need to install Full Fibre broadband?

  If the property has an Openreach modem/Optical Network Termination (ONT) then an engineer is not required. All greenfield sites will already have the modem/ONT installed during the construction of the property.

• Can a customer make phone calls if they take one of our Full Fibre tariffs?

  UW full fibre tariffs are currently data-only products and do not enable phone calls themselves. A digital voice service (VoIP) can be used but UW do not currently offer a digital voice solution. Customers can use third-party VoIP providers.

• How can a customer call emergency services (999/112)?

  Be aware this is a broadband-only product, there is no phone line. This means that customers will not be able to make calls including calls to 999/112 through a regular telephone handset.
